A persistent cookie is a cookie stored in your browser for a long period of time, it may be months or years, or until it is simply deleted. These cookies are available for web servers to recognize recurring visitors so that the pages shown can be customized using previously saved information. These cookies can easily be deleted.
A session cookie is a cookie that is only stored during a site visit. It will be deleted as soon as the user closes the browser. For example, it may contain information from the login on a site that is password-protected to allow the user to navigate between different pages of the site without having to log in again.
